METAvivor Announces 2024 MBC Research Awards

For over a year, my sisters and I (i.e., Sister Sojourn) focused our efforts and journeys on raising funds and awareness for Metastatic, or stage IV, breast cancer. Sharing my story and supporting research have been an unexpected adventure.

I’m so excited to let everyone know that we’ve reached our goal of raising $50,000 to fund a research grant administered by METAvivor. In a recent press release, METAvivor announced its 2024 research grants.

“Metastatic, or stage IV, breast cancer is incurable and life-shortening. METAvivor exists to fund research to transition metastatic breast cancer into a chronic condition, with a close-to-normal life expectancy and decent quality of life.

I am thrilled that once again METAvivor is funding impactful research and identifying up-and-coming young investigators in the field of metastatic research,” said Kelly Shanahan, MD, a long-time volunteer and newly elected president of METAvivor’s board of directors. “I have been living with MBC for 11 years now, and research such as ours is what gives me hope”, she adds.” (Read the complete release here.)

METAvivor’s Advisor’s Award

Sister Sojourn’s efforts were recognized with METAvivor’s Advisor’s Award. The funds raised were earmarked for the University of Kansas Medical Center’s “Mitochondrial tRNA Fragments as Modifiers of Metastasis” led by Danny Welch, PhD. The grant was presented by Sister Sojourn in honor of Brandi Darr.

We couldn’t have done it without you

I am truly grateful to everyone who made this success possible. From the spark of an idea, we had a lot of fun, made many friends, formed strong bonds, and made a difference. Now we’re seeing the fruit of the efforts, and it inspires me to keep going to do more. More adventures are being added to the calendar. I hope we can keep it going. Because we can, we will.
