Today, I shall behave as if this is the day I will be remembered. — Dr. Suess
Did you ever wonder what heaven is like?
A few months ago, our book club read “Imagine the God of Heaven” by John Burke. It’s a book about near-death experiences (NDE). The book shares the NDE stories of people across all religions, ethnicities, and cultures. It’s incredible the similarities the stories share…the bright light, the feeling of peace and happiness, the life review.
I never would have read this book if a book club member hadn’t selected it. That is what makes a book club so much fun. You read books you wouldn’t pick up and read on your own. Many times, after our monthly meeting, I say, “Wow, I never would have read this if it wasn’t for the book club”.
I enjoy historical fiction and thrillers, but I would never choose a book about religion. However, I am so glad I read this book. Although I may not agree with everything in the book, it did cause me to pause and re-evaluate my life. For me, the biggest takeaway from the book was the life review.
Each near-death experience included a life review. Standing beside God, their life was replayed before them — the good, the bad, their decisions, and the impact those decisions had on others. Every detail replayed. They all felt forgiveness and acceptance, rather than judgment or blame.
Self Reflection
As I reflect on my own life, my actions, treatment of others, and decision-making make me cringe. Looking back, I see the times I put myself first without regard for others, spoke harshly when a kind word would have had a bigger impact, didn’t mention the item I was inadvertently not charged for…the list goes on and on. Recently, on a trip to Dollar General to get milk, I was given $1 too much in change. Was I aware that I was given too much change? Yes. Did I mention it? No. But that dollar is in my wallet to be returned the next time I go to Dollar General. It may only be a dollar, and in the whole scheme of things, it’s small, but it’s still stealing. My life review has just become a bit brighter.
Take some time to reflect and replay your life. Do you like what you see? If not, it’s not too late to make changes. Let’s replace hostility, hatred, and greed with kindness, forgiveness, and benevolence. Let’s all be better humans! Today may be the day you will be remembered.
